Professional Products

I'm going to lay down my thoughts on this right now so you will know where I stand. I only use professional products and will only talk about professional products (i.e. what can be bought at a salon or beauty supply). I'm not down with the crap in the drug store because it's just that - crap!! If you find something that works, great; but for the most part they are just super watered down versions of what you really want to get. I have tried drug store stuff and it just doesn't do what it says, and is nowhere near what you can get in a salon or beauty supply. Has your friend ever told you that you need to change your shampoo because your hair gets used to it? Well, your hair doesn't have a memory. Folks that's just straight build-up. If you are using a good shampoo and conditioner (i.e. professional) you don't get that. Then, I always hear, “I love the way pantene makes my hair feel.” Talk about coating and build-up on the hair. You might as well pour straight candle wax on your hair. These build-ups can also affect how your hair colors. Which brings me to my last point. If you are spending good money on color and then using cheap shampoo and conditioners you are just washing it down the drain! If you think otherwise fine, but you will never convince me of that fact. If you must buy something at the drug store let it be some product so you can save your money for good Shampoo and Conditioner. And while you’re at it will you all please do me a favor and DEEP CONDITION once a week. Thanks :)

  1. I agree with you, the cheap stuff is just that. I would rather pay the price of the salon quality and have the great product on my hair that I know is going to do well on my head and not dry it out or cause any damage

  2. This is seriously great to know. I've often suspected as much, but then questioned if I was actually getting a better product or just paying for a brand.

Is there a deep conditioner you recommend? Also, are any of the homemade mixtures worth a crap?

  3. I've found that unless you have a chemist whipping things up for you it just doesn't work that great plus who really wants to put mayo on their hair *gags*
I live a couple of deep conditioners. I've just recently found the love for Kevin Murphy stuff and his Born Again is AWESOME. I also like Loreal Professional hair masks intensive repair and absolute repair are great.

  4. Can you recommend something great for me to try, then? I've used several salon brands (b&b most recently) over the years, and always ended up regretting the extra money I spent on them. I only have issues with lack of volume, not dryness, damage, or fading color.

  6. i recently discovered your blog and love all the tips you give.

what is your opinion on mixing and matching different products?

  7. If they work together great. I used to use Aveda smoothing fluid with everything. I sometimes cocktail things together as well which is to mix them together in your hand before putting it in your hair.

  8. I was so disappointed to read this post. The quality of your hair has so much more to do than how much you spend on product. What is the water like where you live? Is it hard or soft? What kind of diet do you eat? Plenty of (good) fats and proteins, or are you filling yourself up on junk food? What kind of weather do you experience regularly? Do you wash your hair every day? What kind of styling do you do on a regular basis? What kind of texture is your hair naturally? Personally, I use suave daily clairifying, yeah, that's right it's $1.20 at the grocery store and I LOVE IT. My hair feels like a perfect blank slate when I'm done. I cannot stand how horrible my hair feels when I'm done at the salon, I almost always go home and wash my hair out since it is the salon products that make me look like a greased pig, not to mention the smell. Bumble and Bumble seaweed? Yeah, it's called that because it makes my hair look like seaweed. Also, if I were to deep condition once a week my hair would be a lifeless mess. I don't need to deep condition once a week. For goodness' sake, I don't even use regular conditioner every time I shampoo! There are just so many other factors that you're overlooking, it makes me feel like you only like salon products because they ARE expensive. They are absolutely not the best or ideal option for everyone.

And I'm still a hairstylist and will still recommend professional products. Like I said if you find something that works for you great, but you are never going to convince me that your sauve is better than the Kevin Murphy I use (or any other professional product for that matter). I will put it to the Pepsi challenge any day of the week. As for deep conditioner I'm assuming people that are reading my blog are at the very least heat styling their hair. If you are doing nothing to your hair (ie no color, no blow drying etc.) then sure don't deep condition once a week do it once a month.

  10. A-freakin-men. I do not understand spending $160 on getting your hair done, only to use Pantene, or some other crap on your hair. But then again, I'm a TOTAL hair and makeup snob, and would rather go without food rather than use drugstore shampoos and conditioners.

I could never, ever, ever, ever be convinced that Pantene (or Suave) would make my hair look and feel as fantastic as Bumble and Bumble, Aveda, or the Loreal professional lines do. Sorry.

    Great post, Shareena!
